Keeping glass at it’s best

We were always unsure of the best way to look after our precious Glass, until we found an article in a copy of the Okra Guild magazine ‘The Chair’. We have followed the instructions ever since and found them very helpful, so we have listed below some of the advice from the article.

The cleaning of iridised pieces

A light dust is usually sufficient to keep Okra at its best, but from time to time it will need a wash in warm soapy water, care must be taken and a plastic bowl should be inserted into the sink to protect from hard surfaces. The piece should then be gently dried with a lint free cloth. Heavily iridised pieces will show water marks if not dried quickly enough, these can be removed by immersing back in the water and re -drying.

The cleaning of pieces of Okra with the surface etched finish

After washing in warm soapy water and thoroughly drying, rub gently with a little oil ( such as baby oil ) on a piece of lint free cloth. Remove the excess oil and polish with a soft dry lint free cloth. This will restore the original look.

Brief history

Okra Glass was founded in 1979 by Richard Golding and Nicola Osbourne, working from Lightwater Valley theme park in Yorkshire. Over the years they have been based in various locations. Around 1997 they became part of the Moorcroft group with Richard overseeing designs and production, in 2000 control reverted back to Richard and the workshop moved to Stourbridge in the West Midlands, where it is still located today.

They specialize in stunning glass with an iridescent finish equal to any made by the old masters like ‘Tiffany’, ‘Loetz’ and ‘Pallme Koenig’. As each piece is hand made no two pieces are identical giving each piece it’s own individuality, each design is also only in production for a limited time, adding to its rarity.
